Interpol Warns of Rising Cybercrime Surge in Africa

Interpol has raised alarms over the rapid increase of cybercrime across Africa, highlighting it as a growing threat to the continent’s stability and development. According to Interpol’s 2025 Africa Cyber Threat Assessment, the most prevalent cybercrimes include phishing scams, ransomware attacks, business email compromise (BEC), and cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure.

The report highlights several factors fueling this surge, including limited cooperation among African nations in combating cyber threats, as well as outdated legal frameworks and cybersecurity infrastructures that struggle to keep pace with the rapidly evolving cyber landscape.

Interpol emphasized that cybersecurity extends beyond technology—it is a cornerstone of peace, stability, and sustainable development in Africa. To address this, the organization urged African countries to prioritize national cybersecurity and strengthen collaboration across the continent.

To counter the growing cybercrime threat, Interpol outlined six key recommendations:

  • Enhance cybersecurity laws and policies;
  • Strengthen regional and international cooperation and coordination;
  • Increase cybersecurity awareness among citizens and organizations;
  • Foster ongoing collaboration between the government and the private sector;
  • Leverage current and emerging technologies to combat cybercrime;

Promote continuous joint efforts to safeguard digital environments
