Interpol has raised
alarms over the rapid increase of cybercrime across Africa, highlighting it as
a growing threat to the continent’s stability and development. According to
Interpol’s 2025 Africa Cyber Threat Assessment, the most prevalent cybercrimes
include phishing scams, ransomware attacks, business email compromise (BEC),
and cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure.
The report highlights
several factors fueling this surge, including limited cooperation among African
nations in combating cyber threats, as well as outdated legal frameworks and
cybersecurity infrastructures that struggle to keep pace with the rapidly
evolving cyber landscape.
Interpol emphasized
that cybersecurity extends beyond technology—it is a cornerstone of peace,
stability, and sustainable development in Africa. To address this, the
organization urged African countries to prioritize national cybersecurity and
strengthen collaboration across the continent.
